Sweet cheese spread is a flavorful and relatively simple side dish spread that can be served with crackers, pita chips, raw vegetables or similar. Instead of buying processed spreads in the supermarket, making your own from scratch allows you to add seasonings you like. The following recipe leaves some room for creativity in that sense. Some similar cheese spread recipes use mayonnaise, but this one opts for lower-calorie plain Greek yogurt instead.

Ingredients

  • 3 large onions, diced
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1-2 pinches of salt
  • 1-2 pinches of your favorite seasoning
  • 2 1/2 C. shredded Colby Jack cheese
  • 2 Tbsp. of butter
  • 1/2 Tbsp. of hot sauce
  • 1 C. of plain Greek yogurt

Saute the onions and butter in a skillet until the onions  soften. Take the skillet off the burner and stir in the shredded cheese along with the Greek yogurt and hot sauce. You can also leave out the hot sauce if you prefer. Add the salt and your seasonings of choice. Scrape the mixture into an ungreased baking dish and bake at 380 degrees F until the top of the spread is lightly browned. Allow to cool before serving with crackers or other similar snack choices. This cheese spread recipe yields approximately five cups in total.
