No one quite knows where the simple tres leches cake comes from, but everyone knows that it's a hearty, rich and delicious snack fit for every occasion. The cake has the most popularity in Mexico and South America, making it a great choice for dessert after a traditionally Hispanic meal. The words "tres leches" are Spanish for "three milks" and refer to the syrup of whole milk, evaporated milk and condensed milk that soaks into the entire cake, giving it its characteristic richness and flavor.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Cream the butter with the sugar until smooth, then add eggs and vanilla.

In a separate bowl, combine flour with baking soda and salt. Pour in the creamed butter mixture and stir until just combined, adding a few dashes of milk if more moisture is needed.

Pour the batter into a 13 inch by 11 inch cake pan and bake for 30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.

Combine the milk, sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk together and stir until all milks are well-incorporated. When the cake is cool, poke small holes all over it with a straw. Pour the milk mixture evenly over the top of the cake, allowing the milk to soak into all of the holes. Top the cake with the whipped cream or sweetened heavy cream and serve.
