This Irish soda bread is so simple, you're not going to believe it! We love to serve this simple bread recipe with some sweet cream butter and some jams. With an espresso alongside, this bread is a fantastic way to start the day!

  • 4 C. flour
  • 4 Tbs. sugar (or sugar-substitute that can be used for baking)
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 Tbs. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 C. sweet cream butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 C. heavy cream (or buttermilk)
  • 1 egg
  • raisins (if desired)

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and grease a large baking sheet. In a bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, 1/2 the cream, and 1/2 the butter. If adding raisins, do so here. Form the dough into a round and place onto a baking sheet. 

In a bowl, mix the remaining cream and butter. Using a sharp knife, cut a cross into the top of the loaf and and brush the top with the mixture. 

Bake for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Brush with the cream and butter mixture 5 minutes before removing from the oven. Dust with powdered sugar, if desired.
