Tri-Level Brownies
Ingredients
- 1/2 C. flour
- 1/4 tsp. baking soda
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1/2 C. brown sugar, packed
- 1 C. quick cooking oats
- 6 Tbs. melted butter or regular margarine
- 1 1 oz. square unsweetened chocolate
- 1/4 C. butter or regular margarine
- 2/3 C. sifted flour
- 1/4 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 3/4 C. sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/4 C. milk
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 1/2 C. chopped walnuts
- Fudge Frosting:
- 1 1 oz. square unsweetened chocolate
- 2 Tbs. butter or regular margarine
- 1 1/2 C. confectioners' sugar, sifted
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 5 tsp. hot water
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift together 1/2 C. flour, baking soda, and 1/4 tsp. salt into mixing bowl. Add brown sugar and oats. Mix well. Stir in 6 tbsp butter. Pat mixture into a 9 inch ungreased baking pan. Bake in oven for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare filling. Melt chocolate and 1/4 C. butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat. Cool slightly. Sift together 2/3 C. flour, baking powder, and 1/4 tsp. salt. Set aside. Combine sugar, cooled chocolate mixture, and egg. Beat with electric mixer at medium speed for one minute. Add the dry ingredients alternately with the milk. Beat well after each addition. Blend in the vanilla and the walnuts. Spread over the first layer. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until done. Cool in pan on wire rack. Frost with Fudge Frosting. Cut into 1 1/2 squares.
To make frosting, combine unsweetened chocolate and butter or regular margarine in a small saucepan. Place over low heat until melted. Remove from heat. Cool to room temperature. Combine confectioners sugar, vanilla, hot water, and the chocolate mixture in a mixing bowl. Mix until smooth and creamy.
Yield: 36 squares
