We added three times amount of chocolate, so these brownies could be eaten for a special occasion. Feel free to sprinkle with nuts, if you desire.

  • 1 C. vegetable shortening
  • 2 C. sugar
  • 4 large eggs + 1 egg yolk
  • 1/2 C. water
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 C. all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 C. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 C. semi sweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9-by-13-inch cake pan. In a large, heavy saucepan over medium heat, melt the shortening. Remove from heat. Add sugar and blend. Add the eggs and egg yolk one at a time, beating after each addition. Add the water and vanilla. Whisk to mix well. Add the flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt. Stir to blend. Fold in the chocolate chips. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan. Bake for about 25 to 30 minutes. Let it cool for a few minutes before cutting the brownie in pieces.
