Start by using a standing or electric mixer to combine 3 cups of flour, yeast, sugar, salt, milk, water, egg, and softened butter on a low speed until everything is evenly mixed together. Then, increase the mixer speed to medium for 2 minutes and add in another ½ cup of flour, waiting another 2 minutes before adding the second ½ cup. Lightly grease a bowl, place the dough inside it, and cover it with a towel or plastic wrap to let it rise for 30 minutes.

After it has risen, pull off pieces of the dough and roll them into evenly sized balls. Place them on a baking sheet and cover them again, giving them another 30 minutes to rise while you preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, bake them until they’re golden brown -- around 15 minutes. Brush the melted butter over the top of them and serve warm or cool!
