Heat 4 quart saucepan over medium heat. Add sausage and ground beef, stirring occasionally, for 1 minute. Add onion and cook until meat is browned, about 5 minutes. Add garlic to meat and cook for 1 minute. Stir in tomatoes, tomato paste, and salt, heat to boiling. Reduce heat to medium and cook for 20 minutes with occasional stirring. Finally, stir in basil.
To make the cheese filling, first preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix egg, pepper, ricotta, 1/2 cup mozzarella and 1/2 cup parmesan in a medium bowl until blended. To combine the two, first evenly spoon 2 cups of the sauce into a 13x9 inch glass baking dish. Arrange 3 noodles over the sauce making sure they do not touch the edges of the dish. Add 1 1/4 cups cheese mixture on top of the noodles, followed by 3 more noodles, and 2 cups of the meat sauce. Top with 3 more noodles and the remaining cheese mixture. Add remaining mozzarella and parmesan to finish. Cover lasagna with foil and bake 30 minutes or until bubbling. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
