French onion soup is the perfect starter to any winter meal or can be served as your entree. This Applebee's copycat is made more delicious when topped with a crispy crouton and parmesan cheese.

  • 3 Tbs. vegetable oil
  • 6 white onions, sliced
  • 8 C. beef broth
  • 1 C. water
  • 2 1⁄2 tsp. salt
  • 1⁄2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1⁄4 tsp. pepper
  • 5 wheat hamburger buns
  • 3 Tbs. shredded parmesan cheese

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Add the oil to a large pot over medium high heat. Add the onions and sauté for about 15 minutes until the onions soften but aren’t brown. Add the broth, water, salt, garlic powder, and pepper and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 45 minutes. Meanwhile, make the croutons using the halves of the hamburger buns. Place the bun halves on the oven racks and bake 15 minutes until brown and crispy. Serve with a large bun crouton in each bowl and some parmesan cheese sprinkled on top.
