Divine Cherry Squares Recipe

I remember having these at church functions when I was growing up. I love to make these to this day, it brings back such wonderful memories of my childhood. Go ahead, mix up a batch this evening and start making wonderful memories for your family to treasure and share. ;o)

Ingredients

  • 1 C. butter or margarine
  • 1 1/2 C. sugar
  • 4 eggs, beaten
  • 2 C. sifted flour
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. lemon or orange extract
  • 1 can cherry, apple, pineapple, or blueberry pie filling
  • powdered sugar (for dusting on top after baking)

Directions

In large bowl, cream together the sugar and butter. Add eggs and flour; mix in extract. Blend well. Spread batter into greased 15 1/2 x10 1/2 x 1 inch pan. Cut surface off batter to make 28 squares or any size you want. Spoon filling into center of each square. (During baking, dough puffs up around pie filling.) Bake 30 minutes, or until light brown. Cool. Sprinkle with powder sugar.

  • I have been making this recipe for years! We call them Fruit Bars and often alternate the squares with different pie fillings. (Ex. Cherry and Blueberry) They are very pretty and you get a variety in one pan! These bars were such a hit with the kids at school and the teachers that our school cafeteria asked for the recipe and has served them ever since! We also like peach and strawberry!
