  • 3 cups of flour
  • ½ cup of shortening
  • ½ cup of butter
  • ½ cup of cold water
  • 1 tablespoon of vinegar
  • 1 package of pie dough, rolled out and cut into 12 half-inch strips
  • 5 cups of pitted sweet cherries
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
In a large bowl, combine cherries, sugar, butter, lemon juice and vanilla extract. Set aside.
Combine flour, shortening and butter until crumbly. Stir vinegar and water together and mix in with the flour crumbles until well-blended and dough-like.
Divide the dough into two bunches. Roll one of them out and cut into 12 half-inch strips; set aside. Roll the second one out into a 10-inch circle as the bottom pie crust.
Place the pie crust onto a greased pie pan then pour the filling into it. Place strips to desired design on top of the filling. Place in oven and bake for 1 hour.
Let cool, then serve topped with whipped cream or ice cream!
